Hammer Time

L to R: Steel Warrior, Huscarl, Stormrage Veteran

L to R: Steel Warrior, Huscarl, Stormrage Veteran

I try to avoid going back to work on miniatures that are already based, varnished and photographed.  Its hard to justify returning to acceptably finished items when I have so many other things waiting for paint.

I made an exception with this Huscarl, Steel Warrior and Stormrage Veteran though.  Something about the plain old metal paint job on the hammers on these miniatures was bugging me.  They were too fantasy looking and not science-fantasy enough, although I admit thats a pretty fine, almost non-existent line.

So I added some red glowing bits to the hammers.  Rather than paint them glowing from within like lava as most ForgeFather heat hammers are done I painted a couple of bits of the weapons sort of like a red LED, like a lot of the techie trim on my Ursa Miner models.  It also ties them to Dark Lord Prowse a little more, although that is more of a happy coincidence than anything else.

Flint Churnblade – DreadBall Forgefather/Blood Bowl Dwarf

Flint Churnblade

Flint Churnblade

Another vintage addition to the Ursa Miner Bruins, Flint has been hanging around the unpainted figure mountain for ages.  DreadBall seemed like a good excuse to get him painted, so I went for it.

Barik Farblast – DreadBall Forgefather/Blood Bowl Dwarf

Barik Farblast

Barik is a 2nd edition Blood Bowl Star Player who overcame his racial inability to throw the ball satisfactorily by using a (surprisingly high tech) bazooka.  The models clean lines are quite a contrast with more recent Blood Bowl dwarf miniatures (which tend to look like Warhammer miniatures with their weapons clipped off rather than sportsfolk).  I think that the figure probably fits in better with a game of DreadBall than it does in Blood Bowl. Ursa Miner Bruins – DreadBall Forgefather Team

Ursa Miner Bruins DreadBall Forgefather Team

I painted up a medium sized force of space dwarfs last year and I named them the “Ursa Miners“.  With a Forgefather team to paint for Dreadball I decided to use more or less the same colour scheme simply because it was easier than coming up with another scheme from scratch.  I named the team the “Ursa Miner Bruins” to differentiate the sportsdwarfs from the military types. Ursa Miners: Jotunn Heavy Hailstorm Cannon

Next off the Ursa Miner assembly line is this artillery piece: the Jotunn Heavy Hailstorm Cannon.  It bears quite a resemblance to a piece of 1980s 40K nostalgia known as the “Thudd Gun” too, not that I am complaining. Continue reading
