This post is more of a record of something that I have finished, than the usual waffle. In this case it’s two copies of the two part plastic hill that was supplied in the Battle of Five Armies box in 2005 or so.
About ten years ago, theottovonbismark mentioned that the BoFA hill might look decent as coastline in Man O’ War games. At the time I had no interest in doing that, but now I do, so I permanently borrowed a second hill set (thanks PB1!) and painted them yesterday.
The substantially sized hill (each piece measures 200 x 390mm approx) slots together in two ways, creating either a narrow, long spur or a broader piece. Its designed to sit on the table edge, something that I really quite like visually, so I imagine that is how the pieces will be used primarily.
I also like the idea of using the pieces to define the entrance to a harbour or a throughway in an atoll, maybe denoting where reinforcements arrive or where an escaping ship has to exit the table.
I was tempted to add some detailed elements to the pieces – settlements or the appearance of a forest – but I decided to not to for three reasons:
Primarily though, the hills will be used to help with composition when I get around to taking some better photos of painted Man O’ War items in the future. The painted terrain from Dreadfleet provides plenty of up-to-eleven focal points, while the new coastal bits will work well as more neutral backdrops.
Hopefully the next batch of photos will look a little better than these snaps, although I think that they get the message across anyway.

I am hoping to revisit some of the Realm of Chaos scenarios that inspired me as a kid, but this time with the benefit of cutting edge 2018 playing card technology. Continue reading

I was sent a few preview miniatures from the Circus of Corruption Kickstarter that is currently running. The bizarre looking collection of figures looked like a group that I would enjoy painting fairly rapidly, so that’s what I did.
The Kickstarter started with seventeen models in the range, but that number has gone up as pledging has increased. As the figures reward a rapid, drybrush and wash heavy paint job I reckon that completing the set could be done speedily. I’m hoping to get the lot done that way.
Perhaps surprisingly, I have a number of uses planned for a miniature rotting carnivàle. I am certain that I can fit these creepy oddballs into a few settings and games.
The Kickstarter is running for another four days or so at the time of writing, so if a creepier-than-usual looking miniature circus sounds like something that you want to get your hands on, then click this.

I have been gearing up to some Dracula’s America (in Spaaace) gaming for several months. theottovonbismark and Mr Saturday were caught up in the perilium rush enthusiasm and headed to Standard Falls (via Uncanny Valley) recently and we played some games.
The Boss Drum Ratskin tribe, the Crossroads Cult of Slaanesh and the Shadow Empire Tong cautiously attempt to parlay in the Uncanny Valley deadlands.
I was lax about taking photos this time around, but Mr Saturday grabbed a number of nice ones that can be seen over at his blog. It’s also a good place to see some nice photos of the lovely new additions to his Shadow Empire force. There are some nice photos of theottovonbismark’s Slaaneshi cult over there too.
A three metre tall robot covered in missile launchers and crockery “sneaks” around the scruffy boomtown of Standard Falls.
Although described by some as a “sad” photo of a lying down space bear-man, I choose to see it as the external view of an enlightening vision quest for a lying down space bear-man… lying next to a pervert demon.
Ebeneezer Basshunter, Soundbyte, Mr. C, and Talks Big critique the sub standard guttering prevalent in this part of town.
This photo does not capture the obscene levels of luck attached to the pot-bots at this point. Meanwhile Lo Pan assists a local possessed by Vinz Clortho on his way to meet the Gatekeeper.
As the dust settled, the eclectic citizens of the remote, but newly resource rich mining town got back to regular business.
