Gaslands Slay Ride Advent(ure) #6: Cyclops

Some Hot Wheels redecos are not to my taste, so I re-redeco them.

Oooh, please be a car… it’s too big to be a road cone…

Yusss… looks pretty sci-fi too…

Football? What? Really? Ugh. The apocalypse will have come and gone by the time I care even slightly about football. A repaint is in order.

I liked the sci-fi, futuristic lines on this, so I decided to add higher tech weaponry to the car.

A 3D printed weapon from Aiteal did the trick nicely, with a couple of 25mm miniature sci-fi backpacks added behind it to represent power packs or capacitors or nanoammunition or whatever is used to power the large laser weapon/railgun/handwavium projector.

To me, this is what a high tech car in a Gaslands setting should ideally look like.

I like the 1980’s, TRON look in sci-fi. It’s what I grew up with, it still presses my nostalgia buttons, and I enjoy painting those sorts of schemes. It is certainly the reason why I decided to keep the turquoise-blue in the Gorgon colour scheme a few days ago, and it is also the reason why I went with a similar colour scheme on “BDD12” here.

I decided that the hexagonal elements used for the football motif on the wheel arches (is that the correct term? Or does that term only apply to the interior of that area?) were very well suited for a repaint into a slightly cheesy sci-fi hex motif, banishing the football look for good.

Now its post-tech-noir pursuit/destroyer… with *nothing* to do with football, hooray!

I really should try to take higher quality photos, but it’s not happening today. You will have to believe me that there is a little more work in those blue bits than is apparent in the images.

      That’s a good idea.

      Those weapons have some sort of hip name in fiction, something about turning the target into a “doorstop” or something. I read about a similar term used in computers/electronics recently, but can’t remember that either.

          HERF gun, good man yourself Allison! “Bricked” was the computing term that I was trying to remember.
          Although Mad Max and Death Race are the leading influences on Gaslands, the setting dips into all sorts of influences, from haunted vehicles, to Japanese performance drifting, weird tesla science. The cover of the first book even featured a vehicle like that centre stage:

      I don’t begrudge anyone liking sports BTW, as long as they are as tolerant in return. Which may not have been apparent in my rambling above 😀

      The colours are pretty much lifted directly from simple 80s, TRON neon, but y’know, if it ‘aint broke etc.

      I think that it would require a very intense football fan to retain that aspect of the original scheme in a Gaslands car… but y’know, if that appeals to someone, then they should go for it.
      It’s not my jam though 🙂

    That looks excellent, and I have to agree with the others that removing the original motif is a big improvement. On the other hand, I guess I’m more into the Dark Future / Mad Max vibe when it comes to my post-apocalyptic cars. For me, they need to have all body work removed, or even better, replaced with highly explosive sheeting so that they explode entertainingly when shot by whatever innocuous weapons the goodies wield. The end chase from Scotland-based post-apocalptic silliness Doomsday is pretty much perfect.

      The Dark Future background combined dystopian, high tech/low life urban enclaves with lawless, post-apocalyptic autoduel savagery in the “NoGo” beyond. The mix of these two was catnip to young teenage me, so combining the two here has a thirty year hobby circularity that I get a kick out of.

      That said, if I had not got a couple of more sleek, high tech cars through random sources like the calendar, I’m not sure that I would have gone near more cyberpunk cars for a while yet.

      Doomsday is a pretty bad movie, with a few good bits. The end chase was fun IIRC.
