Gaslands Slay Ride Advent(ure) #1: Ghidorah

The first post in a (hopefully) daily, 24 day long, festive, post-apocalyptic series about toy car murder machines.

UR WELCOM!!1!

Miaowy Xmas!

While visiting a gaming buddy recently, I was given a gift of this item, due to my current interest in Gaslands.

I tend to hear “Gimme All Your Lovin'” when I see this.

A fun, thoughtful gift that, in turn generated a fun thought: turning the contents of that box into a relentless seasonal barrage of post-apocalyptic toy car dorkage in the Xmas run up.  Obvious in retrospect.

Doof wagon drumroll…

The contents of Hot Wheels Advent Calendar 2019 includes eight cars and sixteen… not cars. The number one entry is…

I was expecting something Xmas-y, but that’s much better.

…a car!
A car that looks like a dragons head in fact, which is pretty neat-o.  Based on the name of the toy itself – the “Ratical Racer” – it’s a rat themed design, rather than dragon themed, but I’m going to ignore that.

Hot Wheels “Ratical Racer”

The vehicles and other Xmas and vehicle related, non-vehicle items in the advent calendar are perfectly good for Hot Wheeling about the place as supplied, but obviously I wanted them for use as post-apoc/dystopian gaming pieces. So I needed to customise the Ratical Racer and future vehicles to get them Gaslands worthy.

King Ghidorah, arch nemesis of Godzilla and, conveniently for my purposes, a yellow dragon, provides a name.

I added a some Northstar weaponry, some chunky 28mm pistols (from the 1995 Necromunda Goliath plastics, if I am not mistaken) and a dozer blade/bull bar 3D printed by my hobby homeboy Aiteal.

Ratical Racer becomes Ghidorah.

I could have added some patched up panels, some mesh window replacements and other wasteland warrior trappings, but considering how OTT a car that looks like a dragons head is, I decided to just weather it a bit.  As the original design is so bananas, I figured that although the vehicle is driving around in the wasteland, that it likely wasn’t built and is not maintained there, so I weathered it a little less than the other Gaslands cars that I have prepped to date, which tend to look as though they are upcycled jalopies.

    • It’s a fun way to use a thoughtful gift (the calendar) I think. It forces me to tackle specific vehicles and other oddball things that I wouldn’t choose to work on myself too, which is good.

It’s a fun, goofy, high turnover project, just how I like them 🙂 Lots more to come too Alex, I hope that you enjoy it!
