Frostgrave at Knavecon

A little over a week ago thirteen players from Ireland, the UK and France congealed in Limerick, ready to lock as many nicely painted 28mm horns over evocative miniature landscapes as time between fart jokes would allow.

The event wasnt set up as a tournament as such.  Many of the players already knew each other beforehand and so participants arranged their own games in a relaxed fashion as and when tables became free.

After a tough day of frostgravage the Shonen Knives enjoy a bot of toad licking.

“Dont bogart the sheep-sized blue toad maaan!” exclaimed Hayato.

Everyone brought a few NPC monster models with them to the event, which meant that there was a large pool of oddball creatures wandering around.  Worms walloped, toads triumphed and ghouls groped, giving the games a lot of retro RPG style charm.

Im strongly in favour of any game system that encourages folk to paint more than just “humanoid with sword #426”.

"RAWR!" cried the overexposed wyrm. "BRRAAAPPPP!" cried Bad Ash's trousers.

The terrain was supplied by the players.  Frostgrave requires a lot of cover, so it was quite an undertaking.  The games were far more enjoyable as a result of the nice ruins of course. Manly back slaps all around for that.

We managed to have at least one wizard from each Frostgrave school of magic take part.  That wasnt a requirement, but it was fun.

The quality of the painting on the warbands was very pleasantly high.  The warband themes were eclectic, with chaos cultists, cultists of law, dwarfs, ninja/samurai, goblins, frogmen, undead and more.

The goblin warband proved surprisingly efficient at demon summoning through out the day.

A lowly (but beautifully painted) archer, possibly the most effective model in Frostgrave.

The days gaming started at 1000hrs and finished at 0430hrs.  Thats a success I reckon.

Ninja "Kageburi"s pathological hatred of braziers was actively encouraged at the event.

Ninja “Kageburi”s pathological hatred of braziers once again came to the fore.

Thanks to everyone that contributed to make the day fun.

  2. Seeing it all go off without a hitch after all the planning and painting was great, and everyone’s warband looked fantastic. A large amount of fun was had, and hugging several men I’ve never met before didn’t seem weird at all.

    • Im sorry that the strange man hugging wasnt weird enough for your tastes Mr S. I got a few phone numbers on a toilet wall the other day, they will come in handy for scheduling some edgier embraces next time.

    • Thanks Riot. The collection of warbands on show was exceptional, Im glad that you like them.

Unfortunately few of the attendees at this event can make it to BOYL this year as far as I know, which is a pity.

    • Thanks Alex.

The build up to the event, with each participant sharing the latest models added to their warband or the next finished terrain piece was a huge part of the fun. Getting them all in one place was a treat after that.

We got a bit carried away and forgot to take group photos of the warbands, which really was a shame though.

    • It was good fun Warburton 🙂

Because everyone knew at least a few of the other participants (and a number of us knew everybody) there was a friendly, club like atmosphere. It felt quite different to the tournament environments that sometimes dominate at toy soldier get togethers.

      Thanks for the feedback!

  6. Great looking game! Makes me wish I were on the other side of the pond.
Frostgrave seems to be all the hotness lately. Seems quite fun too. Almost wonder if I should have introduced that rather than ASOBH for our fantasy games.
