Mr Saturday and I have decided to broaden this projects scope very slightly.  The last twenty six entries in the Judgement Day project have featured licensed Judge Dredd miniatures, from Mongoose Publishing/Warlord Games, Foundry or the long OOP Citadel/Games Workshop range from the 1980s.  From here on in however, we have decided to allow miniatures that fit with the setting and general vibe, regardless of source.

This is a step that we were both wary about.  The Judge Dredd setting has huge scope and almost any sci-fi or modern miniature could be passed off as loosely appropriate.  We want to avoid diluting this project though, so we will have stringent admission rules.

Quaid here is a Demonblade miniature from about 1998 or so (currently available from Worlds End Publishing).  Its a great little model, if rather disturbing in places.  The sculpt style is very in keeping with the Rogue Trader and Judge Dredd settings.  It fits rather well with the old Citadel Rhode Island Red mutant shown above and will look just as good alongside some of the mutants that I have in the pipeline from other sources.

I have plans to add a number of mutant freedom fighters to this project over the next while.  They are a classic part of the Dredd setting, while also having plenty of crossover use for games in other sci-fi settings.

    Very cool mate, and disturbing… he fits right in! (I like the nod to the original Total Recall movie btw 😉). Out of interest, what rules have you set yourself with regards to a mini being ‘suitable’

      It’s difficult to lock down what Mr Saturday and I reckon is appropriate in writing. We each know what is pushing it and what isn’t however. We are currently running anything that isn’t an official Dredd related figure by each other for discussion before we start work on it.

      Yeah, “Kuato” seemed too obvious. Kuatos most famous quote mentions Quaid however, and I am a fan of using names that I can remember easily.

      It is a disturbing miniature, despite its quite comic book look. With more emphasis on the horror side of it it could be quite upsetting really.

      Something about the sculpt is unquestionably comic book looking, which is the main reason why it slots into this project here pretty seamlessly. The way that I paint suits comic book subjects too I think.

    He’s a memorably horrible mutant. It’s a really desirable set, and you’ve done a cracking job on him. The flesh is very well done, I do like the difference between his skin and his unfortunate twin. Are the fingernails sculpted, or did you just crank it up to 11 and paint them on?

      The fingernails are sculpted, although they are a little vaguely cast here and there, so there is a fair bit of trompe l’oeil in the mix. Hands that size kinda need nails (or often claws) to avoid being too Fraggle Rock looking

      As for the flesh, part of why I am getting stuck into these guys at the moment is to work on my human flesh tones. I have never been happy with how I paint plain old human flesh, so painting a series of scantily clad, warped human bodies should be just the thing for kicking that element up a level.

      It is a great model, that range really fills a niche that isnt as well catered for as one might expect. The poor guy really has had a rough time of it, he suffers some horrible afflictions. He will make his oppressors pay…

    I’m wondering about the sanity of the sculptor. However, you are right, as a a mutant, he fits right in with the cursed earth of Dredd.

      Quaid is a pretty heavily afflicted fellow, a disturbing model.

      There is a fair bit of cartoony style in the design though, which takes a little of the edge of the gruesome horror of it. Which is good. Im not the sneering, schlock horror fan that I was in college. Im much more squeamish these days.

      I never heard of the Demonblade/Shockforce range until it was appropriated by MegaMinis about five years ago. Its an odd collection of figures, but a lot of them have appeal. This guy was fun to paint, I hope that you get around to tackling it some day Azazel.

      I have a pretty large set of shanty town terrain, but I need to add a few more things to it before I will be properly happy with it. You know how it is.

      The buildings shown are from Pardulon, they are nice.

          I played a fair bit of Borderlands, it has a really nice look, definitely an inspiration.

          The owner of Pardulon made a borderlands table a few years back and displayed it on LAF. I dont know if I ever saw the finished piece, but it looked fantastic, with the various gorges and canyons along with the tumbledown, but still bright buildings. Worth a look if you can find it.
