Pulp Alley Apocalypse War (and PA40k)

PulpAlleyMC1vsEM1j I hosted a gaming weekend this weekend, with Just John, Mr Saturday and PB in attendance.  Pulp Alley games were centre stage, with one of the encounters including models from the Judgement Day project that Mr Saturday and I are currently engaged in. PulpAlleyMC1vsEM1t I didnt record the games in full narrative detail, but have included some game-in-progress images which includes some of the urban sci-fi terrain set that I have been working on for the last few months.  Lots more of work on that to do, but it was very satisfying to get it set up in its current state to represent war torn Mega City One all the same.

PB and Just John played a PA game featuring horribly modified and toxic science fiction mercenaries and megalomaniacal space hobbits over on my “Standard Falls” post apocalyptic terrain while all of the Judge action was going on. PulpAlleyPurgVsLeprec1 After both of those games were over, the four of us set up a larger urban sci-fi table and each picked two man leagues and played a multi-player game.  I used Inquisitor Jodorowsky and Milo the Space Eunuch, PB used more of his Purgator space mercenaries, Mr Saturday used two of his genestealer corrupted Adeptus Mechanicus and Just John fielded the two guys from Mythbusters.  It was a hoot.

Inquisitor Jodorowsky and Milo the Space Eunuchlauch one righteous salvo after another at the mercenaries, xeno-infested cyborgs and Discovery Channel celebs.

Pulp Alley continues to be the go-to system for my group, with no real contender in sight.  Highly recommended.

    • Thank for the kind words Frank, I was pleased with how the table looked in the shots. Its only going to get better from here. I have lots of plans and lots more elements part painted etc.

  2. The table setup looks indeed amazing. You painted those buildings with the attention to detail that is often only found with miniatures. I would request a picture with a photo background from an eye-level perspective. That would surely look grand.

    • Thanks daggerandbrush. I will write a proper post on the terrain pieces soon, once I finish off a few more that are part completed. I’ll try to get some sort of backdrop in too.

        • It will be Autumn before I get to it Mikko, but it is going to happen. I just need to get a few days to myself to work on some of the nearly completed elements so that I can set up a more dense and coherent environment.
          2015 has been the year of the urban sci-fi terrain for me, something that I have been promising myself for thirty years 🙂

    • Thanks Warburton. It’s gradually improving I think. It will look a lot bearer once I get a few walkways and the like added. I’m very much looking forward to getting some work done on some landmark buildings.

      • Any ideas as to what sort of landmarks you’ll be making? 😉

        • I have loads of ideas Warburton – ideas are rarely in shortage I find – but time and other resources can be. I already have the parts for a lot of the landmarks and some are already assembled. The pieces are intended to be primarily suited to Dredd sorts of games, while flexible enough to be used for 40k style things too. Current plans include:

          * Justice Department Sector House/Imperial Arbites Precinct
          * Church of Grud/Imperial Chapel
          * Armoured gate house (a pieces to sit on the side of the table to represent the entrance to the Cursed Earth or to the Undercity or to a large area of restricted access such as some thing industrial or a Palais De Boing)
          * Retail/habitation constructions
          * industrial buildings and associated elements

          Those are all in addition to the more generic habitation and retail premises that are also in the works to pad out the table, plus a few items intended to add an industrial area as and when required. Lot of plans, but all actually achievable, timetabled and barring something life altering, going to happen over the next twelve months.

          • Looking forward to seeing those come into being! I have some vague plans for an Arbites tower myself so no doubt I’ll be checking back here for inspiration…

  4. Looks awesome dude! So jealous of the casual ‘hosted a gaming weekend’ comment there 😛

    • Hah, it might look casual, but that isnt the case unfortunately. Getting four married men of about forty to travel from 1.5 to 6 hours to spend two evenings in my place playing games is nothing short of a logistical and statistical triumph: it was in planning for months.

      In terms of terrain, I subscribe to an if-you-build-it-they-will-come approach to my terrain and miniatures projects. Even so, the games might be played in a casual environment, but the coordination and execution of the weekend is a serious business.

      Thanks for the kind feedback Alex 🙂

  5. It was a lot of fun, next time I’ll bring some heavy support for the forces of the Dictatorat.

    • It was lots of fun and it has made me hungry to play a small, maybe three game campaign featuring some of the unsung heroes of the Apocalypse War.
      MC1 wont be left wanting for reinforcements. A Manta would technically be anachronistic, but Im sure that Tek-Div had prototype, top secret Mantas in circulation at the outbreak of hostilities.
      More likely is that I will try to get a Lawmaster or two ready to feature. They fit right in “historically” speaking 🙂

      My Judgement Day submission for next week will be an item that is strongly associated with the Apocalypse War too actually.

  6. All your hard work in collecting, assembling and painting the urban scenery collection has certainly paid off. Your games are always visually impressive, but the newer vehicles and splashes of colour really bring it to life.

    • Thanks Azazel. It feels like progress has been glacial in places, with crises of confidence regarding palette choices and other choices made, but its seems to be coming together now.

      As you noted, the idea is to have a blue grey palette (rather than the very monochrome bombed out B&W cityscape seen on lots of 40k tables) broken up by splashes of vivid colour via signs, street furniture, civilian vehicles etc. The vehicles have suddenly added a lot of that colour.

      Once the bread-and-butter standard buildings are finished the landmark buildings will have minor palette variations to add a little visual interest. I am aiming to have a terrain set that is raygun-gothic futuristic, somewhat dirty and used, that has vibrancy and “life” from the coloured splashes, while still not drowning the protagonist miniatures too much when gaming. Its a tall order, but for now, I seem to be getting away with it…

      Thanks for the feedback. Its funny, but having someone on the other side of the world express understanding of the time and effort gone in to getting this far brings a smile to my face. Give yourself a comradely pat on the back from me Azazel 🙂

    • Winning isnt the only goal of course, but its a lot easier to say that convincingly from a winning standpoint 😀

      Honestly though John, the games were fun, the new terrain and figures looked great and the company was competitive but relaxed. Thats pretty much perfect as far as I am concerned.

    • Thanks Maj! The game shown is something of a nexus that features avriosu hobby strands all starting to weave together into more than the sum of its parts. Im looking forward to adding to it in a variety of ways.

      Thanks for the feedback!
